YOUTH

But Jesus called the children to him and said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these."
~ Luke 18: 16

Children and young people are the future of the church. Our children's liturgy introduces children to the message of the Gospel while our primary schools provide a high standard of education in a faith-based environment. Older children have the opportunity to participate in our worship as altar servers or members of the music group. For the young people of the parish, membership of one of the scouting organisations provides an introduction to a life of fellowship and service.

Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers (St Aidan’s)

The 8th Shipley Scout Group meets at St Aidan’s Parish Centre in Baildon during term time. Our group has a Beaver colony (6 - 8 yrs olds) and a Cub pack (8 -10½ yrs old), which both run on Monday evenings. Our Scout troop (10½ – 14 yrs olds) meets on Tuesday evenings and Baildon Explorers (14 - 18 yrs olds) who meet on Friday evenings.

Scouting is a great way to meet other children, learn life skills, enjoy camps, play games, sing songs and explore new places. We regularly take part in District Scouting events where we get to meet with other local Scout groups. Should your child wish to come and meet us, please feel free to contact us by email. Parents are also very welcome to join and help support the group.

Girl Guides (St Aidan’s)

Guides is for 10-14 year old girls. The unit at St. Aidans re-opened in 2013 and is thriving. We have lots of fun as well as following the new Guide programme which is split into six exciting themes and spirals progressively through Rainbows right through to Rangers. We are a very active and busy unit attending many camps, adventures and international events throughout the year. We attend church parade on the second Sunday of each month at St. Aidans.

Brownies (St Aidan’s and St Walburga’s)

The 11th Shipley Brownies based at St Walburga’s were established in 1981. There is also a Brownie Unit at St Aidan’s church. We are proud to be part of the largest organisation for girls and young women in the world – Girlguiding. We cater for girls aged 7 – 10 years and follow the new themed programme.

Girls can participate in a wide range of activities at our regular meetings and at special events, day trips and holidays. They can find themselves trying out arts and crafts, playing energetic games, taking part in community action projects or sliding in the mud whilst grass sledging at one of our activity centres. The St Walburga’s unit has close connections with St Walburga’s School and, as such, we are pleased to offer our ministry at Church Parade held on the 3rd Sunday of each month - an important part of our programme.

Rainbows (St Walburga’s)

For girls aged 5 -7 years, our Rainbow unit has been running since 1991. Rainbows is all about developing self-confidence, building friendships, learning new things and having fun. Girls get their hands dirty with arts and crafts, get in touch with nature and play games - it's all about learning by doing.

Rainbows are introduced to the themed programme and learn to Know themselves: Express themselves; Be well; Have adventures; Take action and Skills for their future. These six themes are then built upon as they progress through Brownies and Guides.

Children’s Liturgy (Mustard Seeds & Stepping Stones)

Mustard Seeds: The Children’s Liturgy is held at the 9.15 am Mass each Sunday at St. Walburga's. Children are taken to the Parish Centre (a side room within the Church) at the beginning of Mass where they discuss the Gospel in simpler language and are involved in activities related to the theme of the Gospel. The children return to the mass at the Offertory.

Stepping Stones: This is a new group which is becoming very popular at the 11.00am Mass, celebrated at St Aidan’s. The children leave church after a blessing from Fr Keiron and enjoy Gospel stories and activities in the parish rooms below the church.
